ZIONSVILLE – Shane Merryman scored a team-high 16 points Dec. 23 in the championship game of the annual Zionsville Tournament, lifting Carroll (Fort Wayne) to a 47-42 upset victory over a suddenly reeling 4A No. 7 host Zionsville.

The loss concluded a disappointing week for Zionsville (7-2), which had risen all the way to third in last week’s coaches’ poll after a 6-0 start. But the Eagles dropped a 57-56 Hoosier Crossroads Conference decision Dec. 18 at then-4A No. 16 Hamilton Southeastern before needing overtime to defeat 4A No. 18 South Bend Washington, 74-71, earlier Wednesday to advance to the championship game.
Carroll (5-2), which defeated Franklin Central 32-21 in an **** other semifinal, limited Zionsville to just one double-digit scorer as Jack Isenbarger led everyone with 18 points. But the Eagles managed only 23 points through three quarters and could not take advantage of shoddy 12-of-23 free throw shooting by Carroll.
In the consolation game, Franklin Central beat South Bend Washington, 53-40, behind John Goodlow’s 17 points. Franklin Central, a 4A Final Four loser last year to eventual state champion Bloomington South, now stands 5-4 following the 2009-10 loss of its three main starters: Patrick Bade (Purdue), Casey Coons (Taylor), and Jordan Weidner (transferred to Danville).
In an earlier semifinal, Isenbarger again led everyone with 21 points as Zionsville squandered a six-point lead starting the fourth quarter before bouncing back with 12 points in the OT session to down South Bend Washington (5-2).
Merryman had 12 points in the Chargers’ 11-point semifinal win over Franklin Central.
